Life Insurance Companies in New York

New York has its own licensing rules, and several large insurers do not write business here directly and instead use a separate New York company, so the insurer named on a New Yorker’s policy can differ from the one used elsewhere. The table below shows which company handles New York policies for each insurer we list.

Consumer questions and complaints go to the Department of Financial Services (DFS), whose hotline is staffed on weekdays. DFS also runs its own free Lost Policy Finder. Family members or an estate representative can use it to ask every life insurer licensed in New York to search for a deceased person’s policy. New York’s guaranty corporation uses one $500,000 limit per life instead of separate limits for each type of benefit.
