About Northwestern Mutual

Northwestern Mutual is a policyowner-owned mutual insurer based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It started out in 1857 under a different name, The Mutual Life Insurance Company of the State of Wisconsin, and the life company now writes business in every state and the District of Columbia. Because there are no outside shareholders, participating policyowners are the ones who share in the company’s dividends.

Most customers deal with the company through a local financial advisor, and the advisor locator on its website is usually the quickest way to reach one. For questions that an advisor cannot answer, the national client service line works on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Central time. Life claims have their own number, so a family member reporting a death does not need to go through general service first. Deaths can also be reported online, and supporting documents can be sent by email instead of by post.

Life and disability coverage, as well as annuities, are issued by The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company itself. Long-term care policies come from a separate subsidiary, Northwestern Long Term Care Insurance Company, and disability and long-term care claims use a different phone line from life claims. Keep this split in mind if you hold more than one type of policy.

Premium payments sent by mail go to a P.O. box in Milwaukee. Have your policy number ready for any call, and use the online account if you only need to check values or update personal details.
