About Guardian Life
The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America is a mutual insurer owned by its policyholders. It was founded in 1860 as Germania Life Insurance Company and adopted the Guardian name in 1918. Headquarters are at 10 Hudson Yards in New York City, and the company is domiciled in New York. Guardian says it is licensed in all fifty states, although not every product is offered everywhere.
Because Guardian is a New York company, New York residents deal with the same insurer as customers in other states. Individual disability income policies, however, are issued by a subsidiary, Berkshire Life Insurance Company of America, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Keep that in mind if you hold disability coverage as well as life insurance.
Life insurance customer service is reached at 1-888-482-7342. The line is open Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Fridays until 5 p.m. Eastern time. Life claims have a separate phone number. A death can also be reported online through Guardian’s customer access portal. Mailed life correspondence and claim forms go to a P.O. box in El Paso, Texas, rather than to the New York head office.
